The tumulus of the royal tombs of ancient Aigai in Vergina is one of the archaeological highlights of Macedonia - and consequently crowded by visitors. Within the tumulus are four Macedonian tombs (of which only one is clearly visible) and a heroon, all unearthed in 1977, but above all it is a subterranean museum, presenting the precious grave goods in showcases all around the walls. |

The visitor descending into the underground area of the tombs first sees grave stelai and finds from tombs of ordinary Macedonian citizens, who after their death became neighbours of the king. |
